Role Overview
Our client is building a new risk function from the ground up, and as such we are supporting on the search for a The Head of Risk, who will lead the design and implementation of an enterprise-wide risk management framework, with a strong focus on financial and investment risk. This job is available on a 12-month fixed term contract, inside IR35. There is a possibility that the contract could extend.
This is a strategic and hands-on leadership role, central to shaping the organisations governance, investment oversight, and overall risk culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement a comprehensive enterprise risk management framework.
- Define risk appetite and align it with Board and organisational objectives.
- Build internal capability and oversee any external advisory partnerships.
- Identify and monitor credit, market, liquidity, and counterparty risks.
- Oversee risk-adjusted performance for investments (equity, infrastructure, guarantees, loans, grants).
- Lead stress testing and scenario analysis.
- Ensure compliance with UK financial regulations.
- Maintain the strategic risk register and report to the Board and Audit & Risk Committee.
- Provide second-line oversight and challenge for investment proposals.
- Embed risk practices across all teams.
- Develop and maintain risk policies, standards, and procedures.
- Enhance systems and analytics for risk reporting and management.
- Promote a risk-aware culture across the organisation.
- Build and lead a high-performing risk team, working closely with Investment and Development teams.
The Candidate
- Extensive experience in financial risk management within:
- Investment banking
- Infrastructure finance
- Public investment institutions
- Expertise in credit risk, market risk, and portfolio risk modelling.
- Deep knowledge of UK regulatory frameworks and public–private investment structures.
- Professional qualifications: RM, CFA, or PRM (or equivalent).
The ideal candidate will have experience in renewable energy or infrastructure sectors, familiarity with government reporting and assurance, as well as experience in start-up or newly established environments. A background in investment funds or wealth management would be advantageous, as would knowledge of revaluation and economic capital modelling.
