Capricorn Energy is an Egypt-focused energy producer, with an attractive portfolio of onshore exploration, development and production assets in the Western Desert. The business aims to focus on significant opportunities in the Egypt business, cost saving and curtailment of international exploration. This is part of a change in the strategic direction for the company with a focus on production rather than exploration. As a result of this, during 2023, there has been an extensive change management programme in Edinburgh to right size the business for the future. The new structure will result in a small HQ in Edinburgh with a Commercial team of 6 employees and a Finance team of ~10 employees.  The restructure has resulted in the creation of new roles, to include the need for a Commercial and Economics Analyst, who will report to the Economics Lead.

The Role:

The purpose of this role is to support effective analysis of exploration and producing commercial asset management strategies and plans with a focus on Egypt.  The successful candidate will support the business in economic modelling and preparing the basis for commercial decision making and investment proposals.  The Commercial and Economics Analyst will provide a consistent approach to economic modelling and commercial evaluation for all of the company’s assets, creating a link with wider budgeting and planning activities.

Responsibilities:

Commercial

  • Support the framing of opportunities, develop value propositions and provide relevant projects with a fit for purpose level of commercial support and options analysis

  • Provide commercial input to frame new activities, develop value propositions, support due diligence work into decision support documents for Senior Management and Board

  • Support analysis on investment opportunities, including optimisation of value of producing assets. This should drive definition, evaluation and ranking of opportunities against agreed criteria

Modelling

  • Maintaining and when necessary updating and adapting Capricorn’s existing asset valuation and cashflow models and running scenarios for the Asset, New Ventures, Business Development and finance teams

  • Maintaining a simple file summarising the value of existing assets and volumes aligned with mid-year and year end reserves and resources report and corporate budget

  • Prepare economics to support the annual reserves review in conjunction with reserve auditors

  • Support the Finance team in its planning processes

  • Provide input into the Quarterly Performance Reports

  • Carry out relevant prospect economics as required for exploration prospects and farming opportunities

  • Carry out project economic sensitivities when requested.

  • Identify differences (both input and coding differences) between Capricorn Excel models and any models sent by 3rd parties e.g. analysts, CPRs

  • Develop an understanding of international oil and gas fiscal regions

  • With the support of the Economics function, build cash flow models to assess new venture opportunities either within existing core regions or for new country entries under contemplation

Macro-Economic Assumptions

  • Contribute to the development of in-house scenarios and associated macro-economic assumptions to be used in asset and opportunity evaluations

Financing

  • With the support of the economics function, work closely with Treasury and Corporate Finance teams, develop post financing cash flow models for key assets and opportunities, informed by up-to-date insight into lending costs and capacities

The Candidate:

Education/experience

  • Bachelor’s degree likely to be in a numerate discipline e.g. maths, physics, engineering, business, finance, etc

Relevant skills / experience

  • Prior experience of operating within a fast-paced, commercial environment

  • Experience of international oil and gas fiscal regions and how to model them would be advantageous but appropriate industry training can be arranged

  • Experience of providing accurate financial management information and reporting.

  • Proven Excel skills (Advanced level essential)

  • Proven presentational skills and the ability to present informally, clearly, in written and chart format (PowerPoint skills are advantageous)

  • Experience of building and developing effective relationships at all levels within an organisation including ability to effectively manage stakeholder

  • Experience of working on own initiative and as part of a wider team

  • Able to apply a creative approach to problem solving where appropriate

On Offer:

Salary:                 £45,000 – £48,000

Pension:             Non-contributory group personal pension with a company contribution of 12.5% of basic annual salary

Bonus:                Discretionary annual performance bonus of up to 40% of basic annual salary
