Our Client
Capricorn Energy is an Egypt-focused energy producer, with an attractive portfolio of onshore exploration, development and production assets in the Western Desert. The business aims to focus on significant opportunities in the Egypt business, cost saving and curtailment of international exploration. This is part of a change in the strategic direction for the company with a focus on production rather than exploration. As a result of this, during 2023, there has been an extensive change management programme in Edinburgh to right size the business for the future. The new structure will result in a small HQ in Edinburgh with a core finance team of ~10 employees, including a Head of Finance, who will report directly to the CFO. The restructure has resulted in the creation of new roles, to include the need for a standalone Tax Manager to manage the tax affairs of the Group.
The Role:
The purpose of this role is to provide tax advice, guidance, and counsel across the Group and to develop and maintain an appropriate tax strategy that allows the company to maximise its value, manage risk, and to ensure full tax compliance in the UK and overseas. The Tax Manager will need to have the ability to influence and build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate strong technical skills in UK corporation tax and international tax regimes as well as developed research and analysis skills, to enable them to turn their attention to a diverse range of tax matters including, but not limited to VAT, transfer pricing, employment and payroll tax. The Tax Manager will also play a key role in any M&A activities.
The Tax Manager position requires an individual who either has a professional accreditation (CTA / ACA / ACCA), or an individual with extensive experience in a similar position, who would be considered as “qualified by experience”. Excellent technical knowledge is essential, however so is a hands-on approach with the right attitude for rolling up sleeves as and when required. In terms of background, the successful candidate will have trained in a professional services firm and preferably will have also operated within industry, however this is not an essential requirement and those making their first move from the profession will be considered.
Responsibilities:
• Provide corporate tax, VAT and employment tax advice for all Group tax matters so that the company can maximise its value, and provide tax-related input to all M&A and divestment activities across the Group
• Manage the preparation and submission of UK corporation tax computations and ensure UK tax compliance across the group, including review and sign-off of UK VAT returns
• Ensure overseas tax compliance in respect of foreign branches and companies, including liaising with overseas advisors and local staff

• Manage and provide advice to payroll advisor on PAYE, UK and expat employment taxes, including share schemes and long-term incentive plans, and review and sign-off the UK payroll
• Support the CFO and key stakeholders across the Group in providing sound advice and guidance on all tax-related matters
