Metier Peoples is delighted to be partnering with SAMH to appoint a Risk Officer into their Internal Audit and Risk team.

Established in 1923, SAMH is Scotland’s national mental health charity. Today the charity operates in over 60 communities, working with adults and young people providing mental health social care support, services in primary care, schools and further education, among others.  These services together with  their national programme work – See Me, respectme, suicide prevention and active living; inform policy and they campaign to influence positive social change. SAMH is dedicated to mental health and wellbeing for all: with a vision of a society where people are able to live their lives fully, regardless of present or past circumstances.

SAMH is looking for a skilled Risk Officer, to promote effective risk management across all its Services and Departments.

The Internal Audit and Risk department supports the achievement of SAMH’s organisational objectives by providing assurance that key organisational risks are being identified, that there are appropriate policies and procedures in place to mitigate these risks, and that controls are designed and operating effectively.

The Risk Officer will strengthen and promote risk management across SAMH, engaging with service staff, management, and senior management to support improved understanding. Through a programme of regular risk meetings they will maintain and update Department and Directorate level risk registers, and contribute to the Corporate Risk Register and Risk Report for the SAMH Executive and Trustee Board. To ensure that SAMH is in the best position to respond to future challenges, they will support effective business continuity planning and conduct horizon scanning for future risks.

Through monitoring and analysis of accidents and incidents, they will ensure that issues are reported consistently, that there is appropriate follow up, and that common themes are identified.

  • Updating and maintaining the SAMH’s risk register.

  • Consulting with relevant stakeholders to determine, quantify, and mitigate risks.

  • Responsible for assessing metrics and monitoring policies and procedures.

  • Ensuring strategies are within the company’s Risk Appetite.

  • Perform tracking and reporting on strategy implementation.

  • Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders whilst promoting risk management.

  • Supporting the Head of Internal Audit and Risk as required on various governance projects.

  • Supporting the Head of Internal Audit with business continuity planning and horizon scanning.

The Risk Officer position requires a Risk, Compliance, Assurance or Internal Audit professional preferably with a minimum of 2-3 years’ experience gained working in a charity, the profession, industry or financial services. You will have a strong appreciate for regulation and governance, as well as being passionate about adding value to an organisation through risk management.

Regardless of background, the successful candidate needs to demonstrate their energy, drive and enthusiasm for the role and a commitment to SAMH’s mission and values.

Demonstrable experience of risk management, assurance, compliance or internal audit, ideally with a minimum of 3 years’ experience

  • Strong analytical and critical skills, with the capacity to think objectively and demonstrate sound judgement.

  • Comfortable working and communicating with a range of stakeholders, providing input and challenge where required.

  • Confident delivering small to moderate scale programmes of work.

  • Work effectively with minimal supervision, and enjoy contributing to the dynamics of a small and busy team.

  • Understand the differences and challenges of working in a social care and not for profit environment.

  • Detail and process orientated.

  • Committed individual, displaying drive, ambition, and professionalism.

  • Strong IT skills.

  • Excellent organisational skills, naturally inquisitive and proactive.
